The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. Besides celebrating our nation’s independence, the holiday often has a sense of renewal… another winter is long gone and we’re in the dog days of summer, one hopefully filled with backyard barbeques, pool parties, trips to the beach, and other summer pastimes. Of course, enjoying cigars is also a great part of summer.
Often times we’re asked in the shop if there are cigars more appropriate for summer. While it is always best to simply stick to what you enjoy, many of our customers prefer slightly milder cigars rather than very heavy, full-bodied smokes. As far as format goes, the nice weather often times allows us to enjoy longer smokes… however if you’re trying to balance pool time and wiffle ball games, sometimes smaller sizes are still preferred.
Here are some favorite summer-time smokes!
Happy Fourth of July,

One of the newest cigars available in our stores, this massive smoke is the perfect accompaniment for a summer afternoon. It is a time commitment, so be sure you can devote up to two hours of enjoyment for this. Its long size and thick ring gauge provide a wonderfully cool, easy smoke from the first puff. As the cigar smokes its way down its more than 8 inches, the flavor slowly builds and develops gaining in richness and complexity yet still restrained in strength; due much in part to the well-aged tobaccos.

An elegant Panatela Grande (officially this Vitola would be considered a Laguito No. 1), the Davidoff No. 1 was among the first three original formats of the Davidoff Cigars when they were created in 1968 in Cuba’s El Laguito factory. We maintained the same dimensions of this beautiful cigar when we moved all production to the Dominican Republic in 1991. Though some consider this shape out of vogue, connoisseurs know this beautiful cigar smokes as lovely as it looks. Creamy and smooth from the first light, the cigar offers notes of roasted nuts, cedar and citrus with a hint of toast.

Perhaps Sir Winston would have selected this very cigar himself for a summer day. This wonderful cigar is a bit thicker than the classic Churchill format, allowing a more filler tobacco to be used in the medium to full-bodied smoke. The four-country blend brings together tobaccos from Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Peru for a most interesting combination of flavors that while rich and darker in character, is still accessible and pleasant for a warm day.

A member of our newest line of cigars, this Dominican Puro is rich and complex with an incredible range of flavors from a light spiciness and black pepper, to tea leaves and an herbaceous note. The thick Dominican wrapper helps moderate the combustion, allowing it to burn just a little slower and therefore cooler.

LIMTITED AVAILABILITY
We have received a very special and very limited cigar to our New York Stores. Back in 2008 we were working on a project for a limited edition release. Though we ultimately went in a different direction, we were left with about 1,000 cigars from the initial test production. On a recent trip to the warehouses, I noticed these “bulk” boxes of cigars, aging gracefully in our humidors. And there they were gorgeous aging perfectos that were never released.
So, here’s the deal: These beautiful cigars were manufactured in early 2008 using all Dominican filler and binder tobaccos and a special Ecuadorian grown wrapper. What is most interesting about these cigars is there is NO LIGERO (the strongest, thickest leaves from the top of the plant) at all in the blend. While many of today’s cigars are Ligero heavy, trying to be the strongest and heaviest they can be… these smoke with absolute finesse. They’re wonderfully medium-bodied with a silky mouth feel and notes of café con leche, almond, and tea.
Called the Davidoff Special Figurado, these cigars are only available in singles or in bulk factory boxes of 144 cigars, exactly the way we found them. Please call or email one of the stores for more information on these wonderful smokes. They will surely not be around long.
