In the Dominican Republic, Davidoff produces arguably one of the finest portfolios of premium cigars in the world. Besides just Davidoff, we also own and manufacture Zino Platinum, Zino Classic, The Griffin’s, AVO and rather recently Winston Churchill, in recognition of perhaps the most iconic cigar smoker of our time, Sir Winston Churchill.
This Winston Churchill brand is made in the Davidoff factory in Villa Gonzalez, Dominican Republic. It is the only other brand besides Davidoff made in this particular factory (our other brands are manufactured in our two neighboring facilities). Using a complex combination of filler tobaccos from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Peru and finished with a beautiful hybrid wrapper from Ecuador (the same seed we use for our popular Davidoff Millennium Blend), these wonderful cigars create a rich, intense flavor that Sir Winston Churchill surely would have enjoyed himself. Each format is named after a place that had significance in Sir Winston Churchill’s life.
In a bit of sad news, Mr. Winston S. Churchill, a former conservative member of the British Parliament and grandson of former British Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, passed away in the early morning hours of March 2, 2010 at the age of 69. According to a report by CBS and the Associated Press, “Churchill was a member of the House of Commons from 1970 to 1997. Earlier he had been a foreign correspondent for The Times, The Daily Telegraph and other publications. He reported from the Middle East during the Six Day War in 1967.”
I had the honor and privilege of meeting and dining with Mr. Churchill a few years ago at our annual IPCPR trade show to celebrate the launch of our “Winston Churchill” brand of cigars; a brand Davidoff was fortunate enough to gain the exclusive rights to in 2007. Mr. Churchill was a wonderful storyteller, passionate about discussing his childhood with his famous grandfather, and when given the opportunity was even more proud to talk of his own family.

Winston Churchill was born in the splendid setting of Blenheim Palace in 1874. The palace was a gift from Queen Anne, on behalf of a grateful nation, to John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, for his victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Blenheim Palace is also England’s largest private house and remains the seat of the eleventh Duke of Marlborough. «In Blenheim», said Churchill of the palace, «I took two important decisions: to be born and to marry. I am happily content with the outcome of both decisions.»

Chequers Court near Ellesborough in the English county of Buckinghamshire has been the official country residence of the British prime minister since 1921. This 16th-century manor house, which had been temporarily transformed into a hospital during the First World War, was ceded by its former owner to the state in 1917, to be used as the country residence of the head of government of the day. Chequers was a welcome retreat for Churchill during the war years. In this peaceful country setting, he was able to entertain visitors, dedicate himself to his family and friends, and play both croquet and bezique, his favorite card game

Since 1730, British prime ministers have traditionally resided at 10 Downing Street in London, often referred to simply as «No. 10». This outwardly discreet town house built in the Jacobean style and located not far from the parliament building is the country’s nerve centre and the place where the governing cabinet takes its decisions. German bombing raids towards the end of the Second World War forced Churchill to move into quarters next to the underground cabinet war rooms. He disliked these arrangements, however continued to dine and work at «No. 10».

Winston Churchill had a special relationship with Morocco and the town of Marrakesh. He loved the sun and the heat, and often came to this town at the foot of the High Atlas to escape the cold, wet English winter. The bright light at this latitude was the inspiration behind many of his paintings. He wrote his «History of the Second World War», and also painted one of his most famous pictures, «View of Tinherir», while staying at the La Mamounia hotel in Marrakesh.

Named after Sir Winston Churchill’s family seat, where he lived from 1922 until his death in 1965, the new "Winston Churchill Chartwell" continues this tradition and forms the perfect complement to the collection. Their filler tobacco is made up of the well-known full-bodied blend of tobacco varieties from the Dominican Republic, Peru, Nicaragua and Ecuador, all of which are derived from Cuban seed. It is this which lends the "Chartwell" its distinctive, full-bodied character whose complex aromas enthuse every Winston Churchill aficionado.

Although the 10.2 centimeter Short Panetela format with a 38 ring gauge may be small, it packs a powerful flavor and is perfect for aficionados who do not wish to forgo their Winston Churchill cigar for those briefer interludes of smoking pleasure. The "Spitfire" owes its intense aromas to a tobacco blend made up of a balanced composition of matured and specially fermented short filler tobaccos. Spicy flavor nuances and delicate, lingering hints of roasted coffee lend the cigars an unmistakable taste.
