  Spring is back
-----

This is a great time of year... the warm weather clothes have come out, but the cold ones haven't quite been put away yet. The darker spirits have made their way towards the back of my bar and lighter ones have moved towards the front. My larger cigars are looking a little more appealing these days, as shorter smokes were my cold weather go-to for the past several months. Walking between the stores, I see courageous restaurateurs putting out their tables and chairs giving refuge to sun starved New Yorkers who are flocking to their favorite sidewalk café's for an outdoor lunch. There's always a renewed sense of energy in the early Spring months that's just sort of infectious.

It's that "in between" period. And thankfully, we've got some "in between" cigars that are just right! If you find a nice sunny bench, you can easily stretch a Robusto into an extra five or ten minutes for a Toro, or that Corona into a Lonsdale. So, in the spirit of taking just a few extra minutes to stop, relax, and enjoy life... here are some of my favorite "in between" smokes.

Always at your service,

Michael Herklots

Winston Churchill Marrakesh
If you haven't smoked a Winston Churchill cigar yet, you're really missing out. The name "Churchill" has been synonymous with cigars for as long as most of us have been smoking them. Davidoff has been commissioned to make the cigar brand commemorating Sir Winston Churchill's name and legacy. The blend of tobaccos is incredibly diverse, and the flavors equally so. It's full bodied and rich, with a welcomed balance – and this format really shows that balance beautifully! Although Sir Winston was famous for smoking Cuban cigars, I have no doubt that if he could fire up one of these, he would truly enjoy it!

Super Selection No. 13
The Super Selection is made by Davidoff exclusively for the New York Davidoff stores. Out of the 4 formats, this is perhaps the "mildest". It's not mild like our Classic or Mille series. It's full-bodied, but the overall impact is restrained compared to the others. There's a creaminess that dominates this particular format, so the strong Ligeros in this blend are balanced out by some of the lower priming tobaccos of the blend. Smoke one on the front nine and another on the back if you're playing golf, or just enjoy it with the newspaper and a coffee after lunch between meetings.

José Seijas Signature Series Toro
José Seijas is the Master Blender of Tabacalera de Garcia, makers of Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta in the Domincian Republic. This cigar is not available in many places, and the flavors in this cigar can't be experienced in many cigars. There're some really interesting notes of dark fruit (black cherry, blackberry) as well as classic tobacco notes (coffee, earth). It's a great smoke early with a coffee or after dinner with Cognac.

Tatuaje Cojonu
José "Don Pepin" Garcia is one of the hottest manufacturers of today. From the newest San Cristobal from Ashton to his own Don Pepin brand, Garcia has been setting humidors on fire with his straight to the point, Cuban style smokes made from Nicaraguan tobaccos in his factories in Nicaragua and Miami. Pete Johnson, a tattoo covered cigar smoking genius helped catapult Señor Garcia to his new found fame. The Tatuaje brand (tattoo in Spanish) has long bend a cigar for "those in the know". The Cojonu is rich yet round. "Linear" to a degree, but still complex and still balanced.

PLEASE CALL FOR ALL TATUAJE AND DON PEPIN INQUIRIES. AVAILABLE ONLINE SOON.

LONSDALES

Davidoff Millennium Lonsdale
This is a trophy, really. The Lonsdale was my favorite format from the original four. Although I've been rather partial to the Lancero lately, the Lonsdale delivers rich earthy notes with loads of spice and a hint of leather. The age of the tobaccos is evident in the roundness and sophistication of the flavor.

Zino Platinum Scepter Series Low Rider
The blend hails from four countries, and the flavors hit every region of your palate. Medium bodied, it's creamy with a slightly spicy finish. Notes of toasted marshmallow, roasted almonds and toast are prevalent throughout.

Ashton Classic 8-9-8
Ahhh, Ashton... the very first cigar I ever smoked; a panatela to be exact, but nevertheless, the 8-9-8 is wonderfull. Made by the Fuente family, the 8-9-8 smokes with a slightly sweet mild character. It has solid flavors of wood and nuts, and is wonderfully mellow.

Fonseca Don Antero 'Anteros'
The Don Antero series is made by MATASA exclusively for the Davidoff stores in New York. It's full bodied with a rich flavor of leather, spice and earth. It offers a long complex finish with notes of cedar and espresso. Each cigar is wrapped in tissue paper to help protect the wrapper, but still allows them to breathe and develop in the cabinet.

ANNUAL BIRTHDAY FUNDRAISER PARTY
6:00PM-10PM AT THE CARNEGIE CLUB
Every year since 2005 I've held a birthday party to help raise money for Killingly High School's "Learning for Life Fund".

http://www.killingly.k12.ct.us

My former alma mater, it's a small public school in Northeast Connecticut. And like many public schools, Killingly High School is faced with the challenges of trying to remain competitive and offer unique, valuable experiences to its students, but is limited by the confines of the budget available, funded by local tax payers. The "Learning for Life Fund" helps supplement and finance these programs ensuring that Killingly High School students are fully prepared to embark on the next step after High School, whether a trade or further education. Last year, we raised over $30,000 at the birthday party.

Cigar manufacturers and other generous folks and organizations from around the world participate in offering cigars to the guests, as well as donating to the ever-growing raffle and live auction.

The Carnegie Club. 56th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.
