The Lonsdale format is one that is often overlooked by today’s cigar smokers. Historically however it has been a favorite among many cigar connoisseurs. Known more generically as a Cervantes, the history of the Lonsdale name goes back to the early 1900’s, when Cuban brands used to manufacture personalized cigars for some of their most prominent customers. The Earl of Lonsdale, who enjoyed smoking a size similar to what we now refer to as a Lonsdale, requested his cigars to come with a picture on the inside lid bearing his likeness. In 1988 the picture was removed, but the name Lonsdale remained.
Traditionally a Lonsdale measures 6 ¼” X 42 although each manufacturer may modify the format slightly to their own preferences. Its elegant format makes it a less popular choice among today’s cigar smokers who often prefer thicker cigars. Adapting to the majority of market, fewer Lonsdales are being made today, however there are still several on the market worth experiencing. Keeping in mind the Lonsdale’s thinner ring gauge, it’s important to remember that in this case, the wrapper will play a more dominant role in the overall flavor than it might in a thicker cigar, since there is less filler to counter the wrapper’s flavor.

The Zino Platinum Scepter series is a wonderfully complex blend to begin with. The filler is comprised of aged tobaccos from the Dominican Republic as well as Peru. The binder hails from the Connecticut Valley and the wrapper is grown in Ecuador from a Connecticut seed. The Low Rider smokes incredibly creamy with a medium to full body. Its long finish and velvety smoke make the cigar as elegant to smoke as it looks.

The Millennium Blend continues to be one of our most popular lines with its full body and rich flavors. Though the Robusto is perhaps the most popular, the Lonsdale smokes with a very different complexity. The Hybrid wrapper used in this blend is really allowed to take center stage in this format delivering solid flavors of earth, spice and leather while still maintaining a roundness and sense of balance.

Made by the Fuente family in the Dominican Republic, this beautiful cigar is jet black in color due to its Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. The fermentation process used to create this Maduro wrapper results in a slightly increased body and a sweetness akin to semi sweet chocolate. Though it may look intimidating, it is perfectly medium bodied with very accessible flavors perfect for any time of day.

Mild to medium in body and strength, the AVO XO line falls within the middle ranks of the AVO portfolio. It offers flavors of nuts and wood with a light sweetness on the palate. Beautifully balanced, it’s aroma is as pleasant as the smoke’s finish.
